The Yorkshire star proved his fitness playing for the England Performance Programme team in Brisbane last week, scoring runs and taking wickets in his first match since suffering a stress fracture of his back in August.
He is likely to come straight back into the Test team in Adelaide. England have two selection options with Bresnan. The first is the most likely - a straight swap with Chris Tremlett.
The other would see England play five bowlers which would mean he would effectively be replacing Jonathan Trott, who has flown home with a stress-related illness.
Bresnan would bat at No 7, with Matt Prior moving up to No 6, and either Joe Root or Ian Bell replacing Trott at No 3.
Bresnan previously travelled with the squad but was not officially part of it up to and including the first Test in Brisbane.
An ECB statement read: "Tim Bresnan has been added to the England Test squad following his recovery from a back injury, and is available for selection."
