Ameobi Wanted In China

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has reportedly made Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi one of his major transfer targets.
The Swede is currently the boss of Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R and F who once paid the wages of Yakubu Aiyegbeni can sign players until the end of this month.

Having assessed his squad, Eriksson believes that he is in need of a centre-forward, which has resulted in the interest in 32-year-old forward.

Ameobi is out of contract at St James' Park in the summer and has been tipped to leave after 14 years as a first team player on Tyneside. The NIgerian international may also spurn the chance to join Eriksson in China in favour of a free transfer at the end of the season.

Ameobi has been a part of Newcastle United since 1995 - first with the youth system until 2000, and then subsequently with the senior team. He has stayed at NUFC all his career, except for a brief loan spell to Stoke City in 2008 where he made six appearances. He has appeared 20 times for the England U21s, scoring seven goals in this time but has been capped by Nigeria.

He is Newcastle's second-highest goal scorer in Europe with 12 strikes behind Alan Shearer – who netted 30 times against continental teams during his long career at St James’s Park – has scored more than him against European opposition.
