The competition for who wears what in the national team is growing as kit companies turn on the heat
All of Nigeria’s three goals in the World Cup so far have been scored with Nike footwear, it has emerged.
Forwards Ahmed Musa and Peter Odemwingie, scorers of the Super Eagles goals against Argentina and Bosnia-Herzegovina, are both sponsored by the American sports apparel company.
At least eight players in the starting line up against Argentina in Wednesday’s final Group F World Cup match wore Nike boots.
Even though the Super Eagles officially wear adidas clothing, it is assumed that players are free to put on any kind of boots that they deem fit.
Here Nike is winning the battle for the soles of the players, thanks to aggressive marketing drive by its representatives.
With 13 players in the Super Eagles collective wearing their boots, the company is able to take some glory for helping Nigeria reach the second round for the first time in 16 years.
“When I sit in the stadium and I see the players with the correct boots, that gives me a warm heart,” Tina Salminen, Nike sports marketing director for Africa, told Goal.
Among some of the other players that turn out in Nike footwear are John Obi Mikel, Emmanuel Emenike, Ogenyi Onazi, Godfrey Oboabona, Juwon Oshaniwa, Ramon Azeez, Austin Ejide and Efe Ambrose.
Players like Michael Uchebo, Kenneth Omeruo, Babatunde Michael, Vincent Enyeama and Joseph Yobo wear adidas shoes.
