Martins' Strike Tops List MLS Award List Again

Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins' goal against Colorado Rapids last Saturday at CenturyLink Field has been nominated amongst the top five goals of the week.

Martins became the second Seattle Sounders player to claim the AT&T MLS Goal of the Week award this season after narrowly beating out Real Salt Lake's Ned Grabavoy and will jostle for the top prize alongside New York Red Bull's Bradley Wright-Phillips, Sebastian Fernandez's  Vancouver Whitecaps, Mauro Diaz from FC Dallas and Alvaro Saborio of Real Salt Lake. Martins earned a little more than 32 percent of the vote for his game-winning chip in Seattle's 2-1 victory over 10-man Chivas USA the previous, a total that was a few percentage points more than what Grabavoy claimed for his decisive tally in RSL's 1-0 triumph against the Portland Timbers.

Martins joins Clint Dempsey as Sounders players to win the AT&T MLS Goal of the Week accolade this year. Dempsey won his award last week.

Martins has now scored thrice and assisted four times in all eight matches he’s played so far this season. The winner is determined by the total number of votes cast online and will be announced on Friday.

Seattle will host the Philadelphia Union on May 3, then FC Dallas in a quick turnaround on May 7 before the next road match.
