Sserunkuma crowned Footballer of the Year

Dan Sserunkuma is Uganda’s 2013 Footballer of the Year after being voted by the Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa).

The Gor Mahia striker was voted in a monthly press meeting held at Lugogo Tennis Club this week ahead of Norway-based midfielder Tony Mawejje and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) striker Siraje Muhindo.
Sserunkuma was recognised for his role in Gor Mahia clinching their first league title in 18 years and leading them to the GOtv Shield Cup finals, which they lost to rivals AFC Leopards.
The Ugandan scored eight league goals and five in the Cup to finish as the club’s top scorer for a second season running.
Sserunkuma was also 2012 KPL player of the year. He also led Uganda to the quarterfinals of the GOtv Cecafa Cup in Nairobi, scoring two goals and making three assists.
His closest rival for the accolade, Tony Mawejje, was commended for scoring crucial goals that guided the Cranes past Angola and Liberia in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in June and helping his hitherto Iceland club IBV finish in a Europa League slot.
Muhindo top scored in the University Football League, historically netting against each side in the championship.
